The history of the Department of Theatre and Dance is not necessarily a long one. While the College was founded in 1770, there was no formal study of theatre or dance until the 1970s and 1980s. In 1979, with the opening of the Simons Center for the Arts, the Department of Fine Arts was created - which had divisions in Theatre, Music, Studio Art and Art History. In 1989 the School of the Arts was founded and each of the individual disciplines was separated into stand-alone academic departments. At that time the Department of Theatre offered a major and minor in Theatre and also offered a minor in Dance. Finally, in 2013 the major in Dance was offered, thus creating the Department of Theatre and Dance. This archive lists the earliest productions produced in the Simons Center (if you know of earlier ones - some were done at Footlight players for example - please let us know). Prior to 1989 those productions were produced under the banner of CenterStage. However, with the creation of the Department of Theatre in 1989, Center Stage returned to being a separate student-producing organization.
